Bandele falls for a prisoner, marries him, and soon becomes pregnant with his child. They both thought he would get paroled, but the system had other plans. Despite a deportation order, Bandele kept pretending that maintaining a family was possible. However, through the strong bond with her daughter, she was able to face reality.
The author lists the struggles as well as the many rewards of being a single parent. She describes how she has grown from her choices, and the turmoil she dealt with while doing so (postpartum depression, an abusive relationship).
It’s not the most gripping tale, but it’s real. And it definitely illustrates how much life changes once you have a child.
